As one of the twenty-four famous historical cities in China, The scenery of Datong differs markedly from the delicate and pretty cities in Shanxi Province, Datong city is known for its abundant historical relics and natural beauty. Most of the historical sites in this region date to the Tang and Ming dynasties.
 
The most majestic spot in Datong must be the The Yungang Grottoes, situated 16 kilometers to the west of the city center of Datong. Its one of the largest grotto-groups in China. with their 252 caves and 51,000 statues, represent the outstanding achievement of the Buddhist cave art in China in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Datong was originally the capital of Northern Wei and the 'support capital' of Liao Dynasty. Northern Wei and Liao is a stage during which Buddhism developed quite rapidly in China. Therefore, many temples, pagodas and other buildings related to Buddhism were set up during these periods in Datong. The Huayan Monastery is typical artistic and architecture style of the Liao Dynasty. and the Shanhua Temple is a majestic well-preserved building group of Liao and Jin, It is famous for the well-spaced layout as well as the vivid statues of Buddhas and Buddhism frescos.

   

The Nine-dragon Screen in the East Street of the Datong City is also worth a visit. It is the largest and earliest one of the three famous Nine-dragon Screens in China (Note: the other two are respectively in Forbidden City and Beihai Park).

The Wooden Pagoda is a perfect combination of science, art and religion. It is the wonder of the wooden architecture field. It has now also been placed under national emphases under the Cultural Relics Protection Units.

The grand natural sceneries of Datong can be found in Mt. Hengshan. As one of the Five Sacred Mountains in China, Mt. Hengshan is a great attraction to people all over China for its charming natural beauty as well as its intriguing manmade miracles. The peculiar wood-structured Hanging Monastery on the cliff at the foot of Mt. Hengshan gives a breath-taking view of Chinese architecture.
   

Yanmenguan Pass is one of three important passes through the inner line of the Great Wall in Shanxi section. It is also known by other names, namely Yanmensai and Xilongguan. Located at a place of strategic importance and difficult to get through, Yanmenguan was regarded as the principal one of the nine passes under heaven in ancient times. Many famous historical battles have been fought in the area.
